Welcome to the 2026-2027 school year!
Families,
Please join our School Community Council starting in September. Meetings last for no more than an hour.
The School Community Council plays an important role in helping make decisions about the use of School Land Trust funds and providing input on school priorities and other matters that impact our students and school community.
Even if you are only able to attend a few meetings throughout the year, your voice and perspective are valuable. We encourage all families to participate and help shape the future of our school.

School Community Councils (SCCs) improve educational programs and conditions at public schools. Councils operate using the shared governance approach: collaborative, site-based decision making to meet individual school improvement goals.
The Liberty SCC has responsibilities defined both by the Salt Lake City School District and the Utah Legislature. Responsibilities are assisting in the development of School Improvement Plans (SIPs) and LAND Trust Plans, The Reading Achievement Plan, The Child Accessing Routing Plan and assist in development of the Professional Development Plan. SCCs also work on issues brought forth by parents, staff, and faculty.

RULES OF ORDER & PROCEDURE

To promote ethical behavior and civil discourse each council member shall:
- Attend council meetings on time and prepared
- Make decisions with the needs of students as the main objective
- Listen to and value diverse opinions
- Be sure the opinions of those the council represents are included in discussions
- Expect accountability and be prepared to be accountable
- Act with integrity
Rules of Procedure:
Council members will receive training to understand the responsibilities of the council. Council members receive training before preparing and taking action on School LAND Trust Plans and reports.
All meetings are open to the public and the public is welcome to attend.
The agenda of each upcoming meeting, with draft minutes of the prior meeting, will be made available to all council members at least one week in advance and will be posted on the school website. The agenda will include the date, time, and location of the meeting, and any proposed action items.
Written minutes will be kept of all meetings, prepared in draft format for approval at the next scheduled meeting. Approved minutes will be retained for three years.
The council shall establish a timeline for the election, including noticing the election at least ten days in advance of it taking place.
Elections will be held during August Back to School Night each year in the Library. The principal will inform the community of the upcoming election 10 days in advance via two Parent Square posts and messages. Parents who wish to be on the council will let it be known by providing a brief description of themselves and the reason they would like to be elected. Community members will fill out secret ballots which will be collected and counted by the head secretary.
The council consists of the principal, an ex officio voting member, one school employee, who is elected in each years, and two parent members who are elected in even years, two parent members who are elected in odd years.
When a full council is not seated in the election or a seat is vacated, the parent members of the council shall appoint members to fill unfilled parent positions and school employee members shall appoint school employee members.
The council shall elect a chair from the parent members and a vice-chair from the parent or school employee members at the first meeting of the year after the council is seated each year. A principal cannot hold office.
Council membership may be discontinued when a member's relocation prevents them from serving on the council or if a parent member is absent from two consecutive meetings, the chair will notify the member that if the member does not attend the next meeting, the council will consider the seat vacant and the remaining parent members may appoint a parent to fill the unexpired term. A council member may resign from their position by providing written notification to the chair.
The chair conducts the meetings, makes assignments, and requests reports on assignments. In the absence of the chair, the vice-chair shall conduct meetings. The chair may delegate responsibilities to other council members.
The council must have a quorum to vote. A quorum is a majority of council members. If a member does not attend three SCC meetings in a row (by video or in person) the parent members of the council shall appoint members to fill unfilled parent positions.

Liberty SCC Meeting Minutes December 11, 2025 5:30 PM

- Discuss Calendar Options
- Kristen was in favor of option 1, likes starting later
- Julia likes option 1& 2, commenting that starting later and getting out later in the year there is a drop in attendance at the end of the year.
- Fiona was in favor of option two, but would be fine with option 1.
- The Polichette family sent an email beforehand expressing which option was preferred being either option one or two.
- Nobody was in favor of option three.
- For those present, option two had the most tally marks/votes and that is the decision we went with.

- The council discussed the possibility of forming a traffic committee
- Suzi Esteban motioned to form a traffic safety committee, Nasra Mollaim seconded and the motion passed
- Chair Fiona Robinson Hill asked is someone wanted to chair the committee and Juan Carlos Macedo offered to chair.
- The committee will collect ideas and report back to the SCC.
