About Me

Welcome to 5th Grade!  My name is Ms. Kristen Valdez.  I am excited to be your child’s teacher and work with you as a team to ensure the academic and social well being of your child!  I’d like to share a little about myself.  In 2002, I earned a Bachelor’s degree in Human Development and Family Studies from the University of Utah and eventually went on to receive my Master's Degree in Elementary Education from the University of Phoenix in 2006.  I worked at Franklin Elementary for 17 years in a variety of capacities including:  After School program coordinator, 21st Century Community Learning Center coordinator, adult ESL teacher both at Franklin and Horizonte, SLCSD testing administrator, 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade teacher.  I have worked at Liberty Elementary since 2015.  One of my favorite hobbies is to travel!  I have been to the ancient home of the Incas in Machu Picchu near Cuzco, Peru, the pyramid ruins of Teotihuacan in Mexico, the Eifel Tower, Napoleon’s castle, and Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris, France.  I did “mind the gap” in England’s Tube , traveling under the English Channel and through the underground railway system to see Big Ben, Buckingham Palace and the London bridges.  I completed a study abroad program in Cuernavaca, Morelos Mexico for two months where I studied to perfect my Spanish speaking ability.  I now consider myself almost as fluent as a native after speaking the language for over 20 years.  My husband is from Peru and we speak Spanish daily.  Together, we have 29 nieces and nephews and 21 great nieces and nephews!  I love to learn about all of the beautiful cultures and religions of our world.  I love to celebrate all holidays and encourage you to share your cultural and family traditions and languages with me.  Please feel free to volunteer in our classroom at any time upon signing in and receiving a pass at the front office.  You may want to practice reading or math fluency with students, help with a class holiday celebration, accompany us on a field trip, or assist students with our incredible day trip to Biztown where you will help students run a business for the day!  You will receive training the morning before we arrive and work with your child’s friends. They encourage students to work independently from their parents/guardians.  Please let me know if any of these options interest you.  When school is important to you, it will be important to your child.  Thank you for your support if not through volunteering, then through reading with your child, signing their read and respond form, practicing math facts, helping with their intimidating homework, attending a parent night, or simply asking about what they learned that day.  All support is welcome.  Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.  I can be reached after school hours on Wednesdays or Fridays from 3-4pm at 801-578-8180 x2008 or by e-mail at kristen.valdez@slcschools.org.
